Alice Springs is located in the Northern Territory and is Australia's most inland town. Alice Springs is often called 'the centre' or 'the Alice' and is located 450kms northeast of Uluru (Ayers Rock). The town of Alice Springs began in 1871 as a telegraph repeater station named Stuart, and grew as explorers began coming to the area in search of gold. Renamed Alice Springs in 1933, the town is now home to about 24,000 residents from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Due to the central Australian desert environment, Alice Springs experiences hot summers and cool winters. During the summer months the average high temperature is in the high 30's, and in winter the average low temperature is about 8 degrees. Rainfall varies from year to year and occurs most in summer, often in the form of impressive thunderstorms. Alice Springs is accessible by flying to Alice Springs airport, self driving (approximately two days from Darwin or Adelaide), by railway on the famous Ghan train or by taking a coach trip. While in the Alice, there are many museums to visit, the Araluen Arts Centre featuring Aboriginal artwork, Olive Pinks Botanic Gardens, Anzac Hill, Todd Mall and historic buildings such as the Stuart Town Gaol. The community also hosts many festivals and events throughout the year such as the Finke Desert Race. Outside Alice Springs township explore the desert landscape and go bushwalking, hot air ballooning, horse riding, quad bike riding, fossiking for gems or make the drive to the unmissable Ayers Rock/Uluru National Park. |
